Young Writers' Program

Do you enjoy creative writing? Sign up to participate in the Book Month Young Writers’ Program.

What is it?

Award-winning author Deb Fitzpatrick has created a range of activities aimed at challenging and encouraging creativity in writing.

How to apply:

Places in this program are strictly limited. There will be no cost to participate. Complete the following steps to apply:

  1. Applications can be submitted electronically using the Google form or in person using the application form from the iCentre
     
  2. Applications MUST be submitted by Wednesday 28th July 2021
     
  3. Successful participants will be notified on Friday 30th July 2021

What is Book Month?

Book Month is a month-long celebration of books and reading. During August each year, the Middle School has the opportunity to participate in a range of activities and events. There is a different theme each year, this year it is  ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’ (which is the Book Week theme for this year).

Some of the activities and events throughout the month include:

  • Visiting authors and illustrators
  • Competitions
  • Lunchtime quizzes
  • Dress Up Day - which will be held on Wednesday 25th August. Students are encouraged to come dressed as a favourite book character, author, or something from a book.

Competitions

Over Book Month we have 5 competitions that any Middle School student can enter. There are lots of prizes to be won!!!
You can collect an entry sheet from the iCentre our access a PDF for each below. Good Luck :) 

1. Design a Book Month poster

Design a poster to advertise Book Month. Make sure it's based on this year's theme, Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'!

2. 6 Word Short Story

Write a short story with just 6 words!

Competition closes Friday 6th August

3. Design a Bookmark

Create a bookmark design with the theme, "Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds"!

4. 'Must read' Book Review

Write a book review of your favorite book!

5. Design a Book Cover

Design a book cover with the theme, 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'!

6. Manga Fan Art

Are you a Manga enthusiast or enjoy drawing?

Design your own manga character or draw an interpretation of an existing character from your favorite Manga series.

Write a Book in a Day (WABIAD)

What is Write a Book in a Day (WABIAD)?

Write a Book in a Day is a creative and challenging team competition for students in years 7 to 12. Teams of up to ten have just twelve hours to write and illustrate a 4000-word book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Completed books are shared digitally with children in hospitals across Australia. Teams:
5-10 students per team - Mrs Clover registers ALL the school teams, please
do not register on the website yourself

When:
Thursday 5th August (8.00am-7.45pm) 

Cost:
The cost of the day is $15 per student. This includes the team registration and a pizza dinner.

How to register:
Visit the iCentre and complete the registration form. 

Eligibility for judging:
Books require a donation of $240 to be eligible to be judged. Students are encouraged to fundraise as a group (students can have an online donation page that can be shared with family and friends). Any donations are collected directly by the Kids’ Cancer Project and go towards childhood cancer research to improve treatments and finding a cure. Donations must be received by 31st August 2021.

Fundraising is optional. The Permission for Online Fundraising Slip is attached (please complete and return to Mrs Clover).
